A rebozo is a type of shawl that has been worn for centuries by women from all classes of Mexican society. Usually made with woven decoration, a small number of rebozos from the mid-1700s were embroidered with gold, silver, and silk threads in an unidentified professional workshop in Mexico City. This example clearly tells a story, probably taken from a popular novel or play of the period. Different parts of the narrative are shown within each arcade.

Needlework has historically been central to a young woman’s education. The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament features the plain and fancy sewing of skilled women.

This exhibition was curated by Linda Eaton and was on view in the Winterthur Galleries from August 2014 to July 2015.
