Those who were skilled with a needle often used their talent to embellish their own clothing, accessories, and textile furnishings. Although decorative, these types of projects are usually called “work” in letters and diaries. Mundane plain sewing might be done at home among the family, but more decorative needlework was often worked in the company of friends.
