Although the overall design of this bedcover relates it to others made in New England, the figures embroidered along one side define it as a unique creation. The man seated at the base of a tree is reading a book; over his head is a birdhouse with a bird. A bird’s nest is placed beside him. The standing woman is reading a book to a young girl, who is holding a bird. Such iconography strongly suggests an association with marriage and starting a family, but since the maker is unknown, such an interpretation can only remain speculative.
