Bedcover medallion

Full bed cover.
Detail of central medallion and it's cartouche.
Detail of bedcover's central figures. Mother pelican feeds three young birds with blood from her breast.
Detail of bed cover. Floral embroidery, pink and blue.
Detail of bedcover edge, displaying frayed trim and floral embroidery.

Embroidered by professionals, the central medallion of this bedcover depicts an ancient emblem known as the “pelican in her piety”—a symbol of self-sacrifice associated with motherhood. This special bedcover was never intended to be used every day. It was probably placed on top of the bedclothes when formal visits were being made to a new mother in an aristocratic household.

Needlework has historically been central to a young woman’s education. The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament features the plain and fancy sewing of skilled women.

This exhibition was curated by Linda Eaton and was on view in the Winterthur Galleries from August 2014 to July 2015.
