Handkerchief

Hemmed by Rebecca Smithies

Detail of handkerchief inscription.
Detail of stitches on the handkerchief. Larger and sloppier stitches on the left hem. Smaller and neater stitches on the bottom hem.

Many women were proud of their skill in plain sewing. Look closely at the hem of this handkerchief. Someone neatly started the hemming in the lower left corner, but the rest is badly stitched. The inscription records that it was completed by Rebecca Smithies, age 81, just before her death, when she was totally blind.

Needlework has historically been central to a young woman’s education. The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament features the plain and fancy sewing of skilled women.

This exhibition was curated by Linda Eaton and was on view in the Winterthur Galleries from August 2014 to July 2015.
