Crewelwork placemats

Designed and worked by Anne Landon Allen

Four yellow place mats with crewelwork birds. Each placemat features one bird, either a goose or a duck, flying over cattails.

Mary Taylor Landon’s daughter, Anne Landon Allen, was also a skilled needlewoman and worked these placemats, which were illustrated in American Crewelwork. Anne Allen carefully preserved a number of the pieces embroidered by herself and her mother and generously donated them to Winterthur, where they serve as examples of the continuing interest in fine needlework.

Needlework has historically been central to a young woman’s education. The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament features the plain and fancy sewing of skilled women.

This exhibition was curated by Linda Eaton and was on view in the Winterthur Galleries from August 2014 to July 2015.
