The practice of crewel embroidery was revived in the middle of the 20th century. This picture was worked by Mary Taylor Landon, a member of Winterthur’s guiding staff. In 1970, she co-authored American Crewelwork with Susan Burrows Swan, who later became curator of textiles at Winterthur. Their publication included stitching diagrams, designs, and examples of adaptations, like this, of early crewelwork in the Winterthur collection.
