Rarely practiced today, fine darning is a skill that was important for repairing clothing and household linens. Anna Hofmann’s sampler includes squares where the ground fabric was cut away. Using just a needle and thread, she filled those areas with patterns and textures that mimicked the structures and colors of clothing and household linens that she might one day own.
